Toasting Marshmallows {The Ordinary Moments}

If you go down to the woods today you’ll be in for a great surprise.

Since becoming parents Mr H and I have had a little bucket list. A list of places we want to visit with Lil G, memories we want to create, opportunities we want to give him and parts of our childhood we want to relive through his beautiful eyes. Despite camping for years as a young girl I can never remember toasting marshmallows over an open fire. How fabulous that would have been. We popped it on the list!

And there it was, an opportunity presented itself. To tick off one on the list. For those of you that follow my Instagram feed, you may have picked up on the fact that we have just spent 5 days at Bluestone Wales in Pembrokeshire. Oh how you were beautiful. With your blue skies, rustling trees, wildlife tapping on our patio window and the deep dark wood.

We stumbled across a restaurant in the woods called Camp Smokey, where amongst other fun things you could toast marshmallows. How exciting. The setting was perfect and to top it off Lil G loves the woods! From the moment we mentioned it to our little explorer, he was so excited. I just love how something so simple as toasting marshmallows brings so much excitement to a little one.

Camp Smokey was a beautiful place. Hidden away at the bottom of a ravine. Nestled in between trees. The walk down was an adventure in itself. And what followed next was just fantastic. With music in the background, Lil G tapping his feet and nodding his head, our time together seemed to stand still. Toasting marshmallows over an open fire has become one of the Ordinary Moments for Our Little Family. We intend to add it to our traditions and to pick up a bag each time we plan a BBQ. Who doesn’t love a gooey marshmallow on a stick?

Oh the memories. It has only been 2 days since returning from our little holiday and already I am having withdrawals from such a dreamy time away together. How can something as simple as toasting marshmallows on an open fire, in the middle of the woods with the sun shining through the trees be so magical? Reading back, it’s quite simple really. It’s the little things that make a difference. That touch you in ways you never thought possible. Becoming a little family has done just that.

Have you toasted marshmallows?

  1. There are so many ‘little’ things that are great to pass on to the little ones. Toasting marshmallows is definitely one of them! When I got to New Zealand, I introduced the stepkids to ‘licking the beaters’ and eating cookie dough. Those things, a kid has to experience!!

  2. Bluestone looks absolutely amazing! I definitely want to go there one day when Zach is a little older. Toasting marshmallows is the best – I love setting mine on fire until the outside is black and crispy but the inside is all molten!

  3. Aww!! It’s not that ordinary really, a beautiful setting, the sun shining through & having time! It sounds idealic to me and it looks like you had a fantastic time. Lovely pictures! What is better that a gooey marshmallow? X

  4. Aw this is lovely KA- I have such fond memories of toasting marshmallows as a kid, it’s one of those childhood rites of passage isn’t it? The girls have done it once, when we were in the Caribbean and I will definitely remember it for a long time. That restaurant looks really fun! x

  7. Oh what a fantastic spot for your inaugural marshmallow toasting! It just looks stunningly beautiful and I’m sure made them even tastier! We used to toast marshmallows in the embers of beach bonfires so to me they should always taste slightly smokey and salty – perfect!
